What do you think about HGVs driving through Hedge End?

Should HGVs use Hedge End as a through route?
Restricting heavy good vehicles in Hedge End village

As a resident of Hedge End Village living on Lower Northam Road neighbours and I hear heavy lorries running through the village all day and night

We would like to petition the council to make restrictions on the types of vehicles that can access the village. We recommend that heavy goods vehicles should avoid using the village as a through route. If there is a delivery needed then this should be permitted.

The village centre is a hub of activity with children crossing for school and all members of the public. To help us better understand whether this is good suggestion we are asking residents to provide feedback by completing our survey.

This week's blog post comes to you from one of Hedge End Labour Party's campaign team, Andrew Merewether-Helps. Andrew lives on Lower Northam Road so knows about this problem first hand.

Do you support his idea for a petition to the council? Why not let us know in the comments to this blog or at hedgeendblogger@gmail.com?

  1. I don't like the speed the Silverlake car transporters travel along Lower Northam Road.

  2. We are frequently woken at 5am by lorries crashing through the village. Anti-social as well as dangerous. Perfectly good ring-road away from primary residential roads is there to be used. I would support a petition to only allow agree HGVs through the centre of the village for deliveries.

  3. Trouble is the infrastructure surrounding hedge end is very poor that’s why Hedge End is used as a rat run to get to the M27 roundabout quicker. Saying that it’s the very heavy and sometimes empty large HGVs that make the most noise. Silverlake are a problem with the rattling but are they HGVs!! Really should use the ring road. With the new Botley bypass it could get worse. I agree with a petition but I hope it doesn’t push the problem onto somebody else!!

  4. If Silverlake appear to be a bit of a particular culprit, is there a direct recourse available which wouldn’t entail village-wide restrictions?

  5. I have lived on Lower Northam Road for roughly 8 years now and within the last 2 years the HGV traffic has become noticeably more frequent and disruptive. HGV's (and mainly Silverlake vehicle transporters) speed up the road & due to the uneven road surface it causes the trailers to shake & rattle which is immensely loud, and the high speeds often causes our house to shake! It seems as though a lot of construction traffic (for the new developments in Hedge End, Botley & Curbridge) use Lower Northam Road as a shortcut to/from the M27 but these should be traveling via the designated construction routes using Charles Watts Way & Grange Road as per Council instruction. I would definitely sign a petition to address this and would happily assist with spreading awareness. I know my immediate neighbours would be in agreement, and no doubt the whole road!
